IndieBound rallies passionate readers around a celebration of independent stores and independent thinking. It’s about raising awareness, it’s about reaching out, and it’s about pride in your bookstore and your community. So let’s start spreading the invitations.

The voice of IndieBound is the voice of each store. Embracing diversity, IndieBound does not dictate what each bookstore must say about themselves. But the IndieBound spirit is positive, upbeat, intelligent, and fun. It is not the voice of a leader so much as it is many voices speaking as one.

How do I join the movement?
ABA member bookstores that are independently owned are automatically part of the IndieBound program, and can use the logos, spirit lines, and other items created by ABA. Many of these are included in the start-up kit, the Literary Liberation Box, which will seed the movement in your store with posters, bookmarks, book plates, buttons, rally cards, T-shirts, Indie Next List book stickers, and lots more.

Read about monthly mailings, cool store-stuff, and program guidelines in the booksellers’ IndieBound Fan Manual. And for more IndieBound decals any time, free of charge, just email us. These decals are your store's Indie calling card, and we'll gladly send you all you can handle.

Are there usage guidelines for IndieBound materials?
The Online Identity Manager provides a style and usage guide for the logo, spirit lines, colors, fonts, and key words, so you can adapt the IndieBound style to best suit your store. The IndieBound Curriculum also makes a great starting point—or teaching tool. The Free Will Catalog is your creative muse. Your store can use any of the design ideas inspired by this catalog to create posters, banners, displays, buttons, rally cards, clothing, bookmarks, bumper stickers, and whatever works for you and your community. Check out the Bookseller DIY section of the Identity Manager for ideas and specs. Use your own vendors or source one from the ABA Booksellers Resource Directory. You can also call or email the ABA staff IndieBound Outreach Liaison (paige@bookweb.org) for assistance with ideas, design, and production. Also consider taking production files to your local print shop. Remember, print shops are also facing tough competition from both retail chains and online discount print services. Take the opportunity to talk to them about IndieBound...it could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

What is the new indie POP all about?
The Indie Next List, drawn from bookseller-recommended favorite handsells, is the heart and soul of IndieBound materials. Independent booksellers are and have always been discoverers of the next big thing, the next great read, the next bestseller, and the next undiscovered gem. Booksellers can nominate titles via email or online and will receive monthly quantities of The Indie Next List pamphlets.
The Indie Bestseller Lists do what the Book Sense Bestseller Lists have always done...provide the freshest weekly sales results in indie stores around the country. National, regional, and specialty reports rely on indie booksellers reporting consistently. (Find out more.) The Lists will be posted weekly in various formats for download and store display.
New for 2008 is the Indiessential Backlist Program. Finally, publishers have a cool way to support backlist titles in indie bookstores. Watch as the title list grows in the coming months and check the monthly Red Box for these new, versatile sheltalkers. (Who qualifies for the monthly Red & White Boxes?)

Getting stuff is fun, but what about getting help?
IndieBound brings a ton of cool collateral to the table, but at heart IndieBound is about people, not marketing materials. ABA has a full time staffer, the IndieBound Outreach Liaison (paige@bookweb.org) to help you implement IndieBound in your store and your community. Get a head start with:
